Why does everybody spend so much of their time trying to select THE perfect technology solution only to find that it falls short in some areas ?

I’ve always found that best way to approach technology selection is to assume that the perfect answer may actually be a hybrid solution made up of different technologies, designed to perform different tasks.

Static reporting can be provided by most systems and some are very good at it. They may however fall short when you need to know something new. This is where a discovery or analysis tool would be better.

The most important thing is to understand what each part of the business needs to know and how it wants to engage with its data. To do this, don’t scope a solution, just start to understand the business and the decisions it needs to make. Only then can you find a technology (or technologies) to support it.
