This is the clearest indication that our reporting and analysis systems are not supporting our workforce. When employees have to create Access Databases and Excel spreadsheets populated by data extracts, we run the risk of losing our control of data integrity and accuracy.
In addition to data integrity and accuracy, just try and imaging how much more productive the business would be without having to create a-hoc Access or Excel documents simply to enable a decision to be made. We must take requests from the business seriously, and evaluate why departments are requesting data in order to run their own little pet projects.
We recommend creating a change log and monitor requests for data and changes to the BI environment, this may prove to be a valuable indication that the business is changing at an operational level without our knowledge.
